Dr. Muhammad Yunus

February 19, 2007

Dr. Muhammad Yunus (born June 28, 1940) is a Bangladeshi banker and economist. He is famous for his successful application of the concept of microcredit, the extension of small loans to entrepreneurs too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. Yunus is also the founder of Grameen Bank. In 2006, Yunus and the bank were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, “for their efforts to create economic and social development from below.”[1] Yunus himself has received several other international honors, including the ITU World Information Society Award, Ramon Magsaysay Award, the World Food Prize and the Sydney Peace Prize. He is the author of Banker to the Poor and a founding board member of Grameen Foundation.

Dr. Muhammad Yunus is an extraordinary example of how one can create economic and social development from below. He achieved this by founding the Grameen Bank which is a microfinance organization that makes small loans (microcredits) to the impoverished without collateral.

It makes you wonder why Central America hasn’t developed such a system.  The benefits for the impoverished are immensely. If done correctly it can have a positive domino effect diminishing poverty, economic growth, increasing life expectancy, equality, rights, etc.

Hopefully one day we will be able to achieve such a system of micro credits and create a bank for the poor people. I want to share some previews of Dr. Muhammad Yunus videos.
